Two years of sweat and toil is unveiled

A group of Brownies who have been getting green-fingered over the past two years finally saw their hard work unveiled this week.

The Shieldhill Brownies decided to create a community garden on an unused grassy area at the back of Blackbraes and Shieldhill Church to celebrate the Big Brownie Birthday for the organisation’s 100th anniversary.

Since 2014 the youngsters have been raising funds, planning and discussing in the Butterfly Garden Project and this week saw the sod-cutting ceremony which marked the culmination of their endeavours.

The Shieldhill community got behind the project through financial donations as well as getting their hands dirty doing the manual labour involved.

The project has successfully converted the uneven and unsafe sloping grassed area into a multipurpose garden that can be used both day and night for local groups and activities.

Project committee member Lorna Coulter said: “We’d like to say a big thanks to the whole community, the Brownies, parents, businesses and members of the church who all supported the garden.

“It will be a major asset to the village and will be something the whole community can use.”
