A popular local priest who sadly died last week has received tributes from his friends and colleagues.

Father Joseph McMahon, a much loved priest of the Archdiocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh and the parish priest for Grangemouth’s Sacred Heart from 1989 to 2000 passed away at the age of 86 after a long illness.

Born in Dundee on St Joseph’s Day 1929, Father McMahon studied for the priesthood at St Andrew’s College at Drygrange in the Scottish Borders.

Archbishop Leo Cushley said: “On the few occasions I met Father McMahon I gained the immediate impression of a fine and dedicated priest.”

Canon Leo Glancy said: “Joe was very much loved and admired by people, so much so that everybody I’ve mentioned his death to in the past few days has said instantly, ‘he was a great priest’.”

Father McMahon’s Requiem Mass takes place at noon tomorrow (Friday) at St Francis Xavier’s Church in Falkirk followed by cremation at Falkirk Crematorium at 1.45pm.
