This week a speed camera has been installed on the busy A803 Camelon Road with Falkirk Council saying they hope it will have a “positive influence” on drivers heading in and out of the town centre.

As well as catching those breaking the 30mph limit, it will also cover the bus lane which is banned to most cars at peak times of the day.

Residents living nearby are delighted at the news, saying they had been asking for something to be done about those speeding on the road for years.

Despite being told in the past that statistics showed speed cameras weren’t needed, the local authority says new data shows that seven out of every ten drivers is going over the limit.

A Falkirk Council spokesperson said: "It is a positive move as this is a road where there is evidence we have been supplied with by Safety Cameras Scotland that identifies up to 70 per cent of all vehicles are exceeding the speed limit.

"Collision data also shows that this is an area that would benefit from the introduction of this type of camera.

"Excess speed also discourages active travel along this route and we hope that this also can be addressed.

"The camera will ‘cover’ both directions and we hope that this will have a positive influence on driver behaviour."
