Talks end in stalemate between Falkirk Council and unions over cuts

The Joint Trade Unions and Falkirk Council could not reach an agreement on proposals that will hit staff hard through pay-offs and reduced working conditions as the local authority embarks on a £25 million cuts agenda this year.

Gray Allan, spokesperson for the Joint Trade Union, said: “Local government workers are taking the brunt of austerity with job losses, pay freezes and reductions in terms and conditions.

“Council workers are trying to be as helpful as possible but we have to protect local services, jobs and our members’ terms and conditions.”

A council spokesperson said there was disappointment an agreement couldn’t be reached adding: “The savings of £1.5m which were to come from terms and conditions will still require to be achieved and work is underway to assess the options for this.

“The council will continue to work constructively with the trade unions to discuss the way forward.”
