Sun shines on official opening of Legion's new memorial garden

Provost Pat Reid was on hand to do the honours and officially declare the garden open on a warm Sunday afternoon.

The Rev. Stuart Sharp led the dedication service for the garden, which lies at the side of the British Legion club in Dundas Street and includes a bench in memory of Legion stalwart Jan Harvey who sadly died last year and a plaque with an inscription which reads ‘Dedicated to the veterans, their family and friends. We Will Remember Them’.

Legion spokesman Trevor Williams said: “The weather was very kind to us and we had a great turnout. We have worked really hard on the garden for the last couple of months and thank everyone who helped make it possible.”

Local tattoo artist Murray Robertson designed the impressive mural on the wall of the club overlooking the garden and local businesses gave materials free of charge to help in the garden’s creation.

Legion members and guests also used the occasion to mark the centenary of the Battle of Jutland and Wallacestone Pipe Band provided the musical accompaniment to the raising of the Legion’s standard, with Q the Music entertaining guests inside the club later in the day.
