Speculation that M&S could be relocating its operation to the Central Retail Park were fuelled by owners Hammerson confirming unit 11 in phase two of the Grahams Road shopping complex was under offer to M&S Simply Food.

Two weeks ago the company would only say it was always looking for new store locations and declined to give further details.

However, this led to speculation – and concerns – that the company was either planning to relocate its food hall from the High Street store or move its entire operation half a mile away.

But this week the company confirmed its existing store would remain open and a new store would complement the retailer’s offering in the town.

An M&S spokesperson said: “We are always looking at new sites for stores to ensure we have a relevant local offer and the retail park is a site we are looking at.

“We remain committed to the existing store and any new store will complement our existing offering.”
