A firefighter from Stenhousemuir is the newly appointed Scottish regional chairperson of the Fire Brigades Union.

Gordon McQuade has been with the fire service for over 27 years and was previously the Central Scotland brigade secretary.

A watch manager, currently based at Stirling Fire Station, Gordon won 75 per cent of the vote to take up the new position.

He said: “It is a great honour to be elected to represent Scotland’s 5500 firefighters and emergency control staff.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to the large number of colleagues who voted for me.”

Looking to the future, he added: “These are tough times we face and many challenges lie ahead. My priority is to defend our vital public service and the conditions of those who work within it on behalf of our communities across Scotland.”

Congratulating him on his election, FBU general secretary Matt Wrack said: “I look forward to working with Gordon to stand up for our firefighters and the outstanding public service they provide.”

Gordon will work alongside Larbert firefighter Stephen Thomson who is the Scottish FBU secretary.
