The Ship Inn, in Newhouse Road, Grangemouth, regularly supports groups like brain injury charity Headway and pulled out all the stops last year with its Helping Handbags appeal.

This year’s worthy cause is certainly close to Ship Inn publican Melanie Clyde’s heart.

She said: “We chose Treats for Troops because we are actually a bit of military family – my dad was in the Argylls and my sisters are married to Argylls so we have a strong connection with the Armed Forces.

“We had success with Helping Handbags last year, so we thought, since we are a very male-dominated pub, we could do something that our regulars could help with.”

Treats for Troops was founded a few years ago by an Army wife as a way to help provide service personnel, who might not have loved ones at home, with packages of items to help make their Christmas abroad a little better.

Melanie said: “It’s really just a shoebox full of things like chocolate, magazines, crossword puzzle books and a Christmas card to say how much we appreciate their service. We are collecting the boxes now at the Ship Inn and later this month they will be collected and shipped out to the troops.”

Shoeboxes must be handed in to The Ship Inn no later than Friday, November 11, so they can be sent to the troops in time for Christmas.
