Taking place throughout Scotland by charity The Reading Agency in partnership with libraries and TesBooco Bank, it is designed to encourage children to read six books during the summer break.

Organisers hope to inspire 40,000 children to take part.

Grants are also available to libraries taking part and Falkirk Community Trust put the funding towards a Messy Workshop in the Hope Street library last week.

This year’s theme, The Big Friendly Read, has been created to mark Roald Dahl’s 100th birthday.

Quentin Blake, who has illustrated many of the Roald Dahl books, has designed exclusive collecting cards which feature many of the author’s best-known characters and fun activities for children to collect as they progress through the reading challenge.

Lesley O’Hare, FCT’s culture and libraries manager, welcomed the opportunity to take part in the challenge. She said: “We’re all very excited about The Big Friendly Read and that’s inspired us to feature the work of Roald Dahl across the trust this summer.

“Illyria will be staging Danny, Champion of the World at the Helix, Disney’s The BFG can be seen at The Hippodrome and we have had Messy Workshops in a number of our libraries.

“This is a great initiative which encourages as many children as possible to go to their local libraries and to enjoy reading.”
