‘Mastermind’ it wasn’t, but the impromptu quiz set by president Bill Cartner and secretary Bob MacKay certainly kept members of the Probus Club on their toes at their last meeting when the scheduled speaker had to pull out at short notice. Seats are still available on the coach for the outing on September 10 to East Fortune Air Museum where Concorde is on display. Contact Bill Cartner (01324) 718107 or Bob MacKay (01324) 718365.

Old Parish

David Wynndrum, interim moderator and minister, selected several more challenging hymns for the choir and congregation to include in his service last Sunday which were handled well by all. However, as always we ended with two well known hymns that the congregation sung passionately and with feeling. We should never forget how therapeutic and beneficial the act of singing together is. Notices included the news that we urgently needed more helpers for the Girls’ Brigade but fortunately our Captain Mrs O’Brien will continue for a further year, that the services of the Falkirk Foodbank are still needed and the Nomination committee will be meeting on Monday evening. With a shortage of space in the cemetery, work by Falkirk Council is now consequently proceeding to reduce the size of the car park and taking the opportunity to repair the boundary walls. On Sunday, Morning Service will be conducted by our Locum Minster Rev. David Wandrum at 11 a.m., Choir practice at 9.45 a.m., Prayer Meeting in the Vestry at 10.30 a.m.; Youth Church meets in the church at 11 a.m., Creche in the Fellowship Room at 11 a.m. On duty are N Rule and H Park. Duty for Readings - H Jeffery and Prayer J Morrison. Polmont Horticultural Society’s annual show is on Saturday, September 6 in Polmont Sports Centre from 2 – 4.30 p.m. For more details please contact Janet Anderson on (01324) 711882. Rotary Club

President Norman Black was in the chair for the weekly meeting. After dinner, President Norman dealt with items of business and invited Rotarian Malcolm Nicol to introduce the speaker for the evening, Baillie Billy Buchanan. He spoke about his time in local government and gave an insightful and impassioned talk about his role serving his community. He also gave the club fascinating information on his many and varied collections. Billy’s talk was full of humour and asides and was enjoyed by the whole club. After a number of questions the vote of thanks was given by Rotarian Peter Moodie. President Norman closed the meeting with the Rotary Toast. Information on Polmont Rotary Club can be found at www.polmontrotary.org.
