Shortly before 2.30am counting officer Mary Pitcaithly announced that 44,987 had voted to remain, while 34,271 had backed the leave camp.

The result was greeted by cheers and applause from the small gathering of supporters for staying in Europe who were in the counting hall within Grangemouth Sports Complex.

A turnout of 67.6 per cent - two out of every three of those eligible to vote in the Falkirk Council area - showed fears of voter apathy for the referendum were unfounded.
