East Falkirk MP renews call for Statutory Sick Pay to be increased

Calls have been renewed for Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) to be increased in line with a Real Living Wage and made available all year round.

Research has revealed the UK offers the “least generous support of any advanced economy” for people unable to work due to illness.

A Resolution Foundation report found the main support available for self-isolating staff is SSP – but those earning less than £120 per week don’t qualify.

That sees one in four part-time workers and one in seven retail, hospitality and leisure employees left with no income if they have to self-isolate.

East Falkirk MP Martyn Day said: “It is shameful that we are ten months into a global health pandemic and this Tory government continues to preside over one of the lowest rates of SSP in Europe.

“The Scottish Government’s £500 payment to people in work receiving means-tested benefits is the right approach – but without the powers to improve sick pay, thousands of Scots are still being short-changed.”
