Following the historic deal, which members of Parliament backed by 521 votes to 73, Mr Day – who voted against the deal – blasted his fellow Westminster MPs for giving the UK government a “blank cheque” to proceed with Brexit.

Mr Day said: “It is increasingly clear no UK Government of any colour will ever act in Scotland’s interests, and Union of Equals or family of nations will never exist. The only way to protect Scotland’s interests, and regain the full benefits of EU membership, is to become an independent country.

“The Brexit disaster which is about to unfold is now owned jointly by Labour and the Tories. No sane politician could give Johnson’s government of charlatans a blank cheque to implement this atrocious deal.”

The UK will severed its ties with the EU on December 31.
