The measures were put in place in the 13 blocks in Callendar Park when social distancing rules were first introduced by the UK Government.

However, concerns have been expressed over the practicality of the council-issued guidance by those who live in some of the high rises where servicing work has left only one lift is in use.

One resident said: “Since the lockdown began we have adhered to the rules of no more than two people in the lift.

“Due to work on the lifts there is only one lift serviceable in each block so one lift servicing over 80 dwellings.”

Falkirk Council has stated the rules were brought into effect to ensure safety.

A spokesman for the local authority said: “Prior to lockdown, we advised that a maximum of two people use the lift to prevent overcrowding.

“After the introduction of social distancing rules, we changed it to one household per lift.

“This is to protect our tenants/residents from Covid-19 and to minimise the spread of the virus. We do not have the power to enforce social distancing as it is not a law.

“Daily disinfecting is carried out in the touch points and in communal places to protect tenants and residents.

“Ten blocks out of 13 have two lifts working, however, due to upgrading work taking place on the three blocks only one lift per block is working currently.”
