Provost Buchanan along with SNP leader Cecil Meiklejohn, Labour group leader Robert Bissett and Conservative leader Lynn Munro also sent their thanks to council staff working hard to keep essential services going.

The statement said: “We’ve seen a massive response from volunteers and local communities to help get vital food and medicine delivered to those who are unable to help themselves due to their circumstances.

“This response has been very impressive and greatly appreciated and demonstrates that fundamentally we really do care as a society and can come together in the harshest of times.”

The politicians also thanked council employees who are still working on the front line including refuse collectors, home carers and emergency repair teams – and those working behind the scenes, often from home, to support them.

They said: “This work continues and we would like to reassure communities that everything possible is being done to ensure these vital services carries on throughout this crisis.

“We know there is great anxiety and stress everywhere right now but by following the simple advice to remain at home, practice social distancing and only go out for exercise or essential supplies then we will get through this more quickly.

“Finally, as we move forward, we know there will be more challenges ahead. We want to thank everyone who is helping now and in the future. You are making a real difference and we all owe you a massive debt of gratitude.”
