Police Scotland boss Phil Gormley QPM objected to an application from Stenhousemuir Cricket Club for a provisional licence to sell drink at the celebration to mark the youngster’s first birthday.

In a letter to Falkirk Council Licensing Board the country’s top cop said he did not think “it was right” to have alcohol available at the function planned for next month.

A spokesman for the council said: “Police Scotland objected to the application as the event was solely focussed on children and they felt that the need for alcohol was unnecessary and in contravention of the licensing objective of protecting children from harm.”

The board granted the application unanimously.
