Plans to remember Charlotte Dundas are steaming ahead

The Charlotte Dundas was built in Grangemouth by William Symington in 1802 and now the Friends of Charlotte Dundas want to remember this historic event by creating a canal heritage trail and perhaps a stand alone depiction of the vessel itself.

A public consultation of the group’s proposals will be held in Dalgrain Community Hall, Avon Street, Grangemouth from 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 8pm next Tuesday, April 5.

The project involves the formation of a Charlotte Dundas Heritage Trail from the Helix Park to Lock 1 in Grangemouth’s Old Town, complete with information panels and an exhibit area to the east of Lock 1, possibly in a similar vein to the town’s successful Spitfire Memorial.

Proposals state there would be a scale model of the Charlotte Dundas at the entrance to Lock 1, surrounded by a seating area exactly to the scale of the original vessel. It is envisaged the boat’s paddle wheel could have technology installed so it could become an interactive information point.
