IN PICTURES: Revived Mariners Day goes from strength to strength

In the second year since the event made a reappearance on the summer calendar, hundreds lined the streets of Camelon to watch the parade, which featured bands, peformers and schoolchildren.

It left from Lock 16 before winding its way around the village to cheers from all those watching.

The procession had rousing musical accompaniment from Camelon Pipe Band and Tulliallan Pipes and Drums.

Everyone then headed to Stirling Road playing fields for the crowning ceremony when Bantaskin Primary School pupil Jennifer Cooke (10) was crowned Mariners Day Queen 2016 by local florist Aileen Ferguson.

Lindsay Smith took part in the symbolic Ceremony of the Keys when he made the presentation to Provost Pat Reid.

Dowager Queen Andrea Samuel addressed the crowds before the crowning of the new queen and the release of doves.

The rain held off until after the main ceremony but despite the cool and damp conditions many people stayed on after the platform party had left to enjoy the afternoon’s entertainment.

This was the second Mariners Day to take place since 2006 and the organising committee thanked all those involved in making it such a huge success.

A spokesman said: “We were supported very strongly once again by local businesses in Camelon and beyond through sponsorship and by providing equipment, cars and transportation for the parade amongst other things.

“Although the small committee work extremely hard to put on a day to remember for the children of the Camelon area, we are much indebted to those who assist on the day itself by helping to marshal the parade and act as stewards in the park area and those who work behind the scenes.”
