In pictures: Kids kick sectarianism into touch

Coaching students from Forth Valley College teamed up with Supporters Direct Scotland’s The Colour Of Our Scarves campaign to use sport as a way of uniting people.

Around 120 pupils from three primaries – St Margaret’s, St Andrew’s and Westquarter – joined in the fun last week at Galaxy Sport’s Little Kerse facility in Grangemouth with 17 budding second year HND sports students from Forth Valley College (FVC).

The event allowed the students to complete one of their management modules while the kids enjoyed a range of sports including football, rugby, athletics and dance coaching, as well as an innovative presentation on anti-sectarianism.

The Co-op also provided all snacks and refreshments on the day.

Mark Reid, project manager with Supporter Direct Scotland, and also a former FVC sports coaching student, said: “The students have been excellent over the period of time we have been working with them. They deserve great credit and praise for their effort and enthusiasm towards the event.

“We are delighted that a group of young students have taken the opportunity with our help, to try and make a positive impact in their communities, utilising sport as the vehicle to address sectarianism and promote equality.

“We received excellent feedback on the day from the teachers an pupils alike and thanks to the support of LK Galaxy Sports and The Co-op a great day was had by all.”

FVC sports coaching and fitness lecturer Grant Ralston said: “I am very proud of all the FVC coaching students.

They delivered exceptional community coaching sessions that ensured that the school pupils had an enjoyable morning.

“I wish to thank The Colour of Our Scarves for giving the students an opportunity to be involved in such a positive initiative.”
