Now, even more people than before qualify for a free flu jab. As well as over 65s, pregnant people and those at risk due to existing health conditions, this year unpaid carers and those who lived with people who shielded during lockdown are also urged to get vaccinated.

Adults over 65 and those with a health condition will have received a letter explaining how to make an appointment. If you have not received a letter but believe you should have, visit the NHS Inform website. Pregnant women, unpaid carers and household members of those shielding should also visit for details of how to get vaccinated.

Allister Short, Director of the West Lothian Health and Social Care Partnership said: “Flu is serious and with COVID-19 still circulating in the community there is increased risk to life if you are ill with both viruses simultaneously. It’s important that we all play our part to keep ourselves as healthy as possible over the winter months. Flu vaccination is a big part of that.”

Strict infection prevention and control measures will be in place for anyone getting a vaccine. People should attend on their own, if they do not require assistance, and wear loose sleeved clothing, underneath jackets and coats, if possible. People are also being reminded to wear a face covering and observe social distancing while travelling.

Pat Wynne, Nurse Director, Primary and Community Care, added: “This year it’s more important than ever that everyone who is eligible gets their free flu vaccine as early as possible. Getting vaccinated is the best way to protect you, your family and the community from contracting and spreading flu, especially if you have a health condition. Anyone who is not sure if they are eligible or where to get their vaccine should visit NHS Inform.”

More information on eligibility and how to make an appointment in West Lothian is available at NHS Inform or call 0800 22 44 88 where an NHS 24 call handler can assist.
