The committee confirmed earlier today that, due to uncertainty regarding social distancing and the likelihood restrictions would not be being lifted in the coming weeks, it had no other option but to cancel the event, which had been rescheduled from June to August.

A committee spokesperson said: “We understand this will be as big a disappointment to many as it is to the committee. For the retinue elect it would have been impossible for them to have the year we had hoped for them.

Queen elect Amy Meichan will now have over a year to wait to enjoy her crowning ceremony in Zetland Park.

She will have the same retinue as she would have had this year – unless any of the children do not want to take part, then replacements will be voted for.

Beancross Primary School was due to put forward the queen elect and retinue in 2021, but that will now be put back to 2022 and Sacred Heart will get its turn in 2023.
