Temple nightclub joins live venues fundraising campaign to survive winter

Live music venues fear they will have to rely on fundraising activities to make it through the winter.

The warning came from the Music Venues Trust (MVT) which said the mix of social distancing rules and the curfew will leave its members facing a difficult winter.

The doors to all live venues closed in March, and operators still have no indication when they will be able to re-open to full houses.

MVT’s campaign has raised close to £3m to keep grassroots operators alive since April.

Creative Scotland has also handed out lifeline financial support to a host of venues, including Falkirk nightclub Temple, which got £35,000.

The Burnbank Road venue is home to DJs and hosts regular live sets from a wide variety of local bands and acts from further afield.

Mark Davys, chief executive of MVT, said: “Government restrictions have reduced capacity in venues down to 25 .per cent.

“Then restrictions on hours, we estimate, has removed something like 50% of their income.

“The venue now has half of its available trading hours and a quarter of its usual audience. By that marker they are getting 12.5% of their income.”

Mr Davyd said more money will be needed to see the sector through the next six months with the furlough scheme coming to a close.

Venues were given the all-clear to begin trading again from 15 August, but only 55 per cent had plans to reopen before Christmas with social distancing rules in place.
