ROOTS Helping Hands Food Share has set up a new base in Foundry Road in Bonnybridge, having previously operated out of a cupboard in the village’s community centre where its team of volunteers helped to gather and distribute hundreds of meals to those in need during the coronavirus pandemic.

With the end of the UK Government’s furlough period looming, ROOTS members feel the timing is right to expand their operation.

Councillor David Grant and Provost Billy Buchanan helped the not-for-profit organisation, which launched in 2018, to find its new headquarters. Volunteers hope to have the premises up and running as quickly as possible.

Could Italy go back on the UK’s quarantine list as coronavirus cases rise?

Given the possibility of nationwide Covid-19 restrictions being reintroduced, those who run ROOTS are now looking to enlist the support of more volunteers, specifically drivers, to hand out their free food parcels.

Jennifer Anderson, ROOTS founder and secretary, said: “We’re looking to start providing from our premises as soon as we can because I think there’s going to be a spike in cases.

“Since March, we’ve fed about 1100 people and nearly 300 households.

“We’re going to prepare for the eventuality Covid-19 does spike so we can help as many people as possible.”

Supported by CVS Falkirk and Falkirk Council, ROOTS also works closely with the Citizens Advice Bureau.
