Retro Nostalgia 1991: Retirement is sweet for Lily

Larbert woman Lily Allan has retired after 21 years from Highland Toffee makers, McCowan’s.

Lily (61) started work as a cleaner at the Stenhousemuir factory but for the last 16 years she was part of the large workforce which produces some of Scotland’s favourite sweets.

At a retirement presentation held in her honour managing director Aidan Craig handed over a gold chain, two delicate Coalport figurines and a bouquet of flowers.

Lookng back on her 21 years with McCowan’s, Lily has fond memories.

She said: ‘‘There have been a lot of changes since I started. In those days a lot of work was done by hand. Now it is much easier.’’

Lily has lived in Larbert all her life. She has a son, Jim, a daughter, Isabel, and four grandchildren.
