Retro News 1989: ‘Hands off my squad’ is Duffy’s response to transfer speculation

Falkirk boss Jim Duffy this week issued a ‘‘hands off’’ message to any manager eyeing up his first team squad.

On the eve of a make or break week for the club, Duffy blasted rumours centre-half Stuart Burgess has been targeted by Dundee and St Mirren as the man to solve their defensive problems.

‘‘Utter rubbish,’’ was Duffy’s reaction. ‘‘I have not received any bids for Stuart Burgess or an other member of my first team squad and I have been given an assurance from the board that I do not have to sell a player to make ends meet. This squad will remain intact until I decide to sell anyone.’’

Commenting on the £150,000 price tag reportedly placed on Burgess’ head, Duffy added: ‘‘If someone made me an offer like that I wouldn’t be interested. Burgess is worth much more than that. He won’t be going anywhere.’’

Burgess, who missed the Bairns’ match against Morton through suspension, will return to first team action on Saturday against Meadowbank.

Two points would set the Bairns up perfectly for the crunch match of the season – against league leaders Dunfermline on Tuesday night.
