Retro News 1988:‘Cheerless amenity’ slammed by critic

Falkirk Town Hall has been labelled ‘‘cheerless’’ by a disgruntled drama critic.

But Kenneth Roy, adjudicator at the Festival of One-act Plays staged at the hall earlier this month, has been accused of making a crisis out of a drama by a council boss. Mr Roy’s comments came at the end of the Community Drama Association’s annual festival in front of an audience which barely quarter-filled the town hall. He said: ‘‘It’s disappointing that the audience had to watch the festival in this cheerless civic amenity.

‘‘If it had been held in almost any other district in Scotland there would have been a 300/400-seat purpose built theatre. The audience here would have almost filled it and there would have been a much better atmosphere.’’
