Family Mediation Central Scotland had to stop its face-to-face service with parents on March 17 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

However, it has now launched a new online mediation service. This will enable parents to access the services of a family mediator using the

online platform Zoom.

Family mediation is a voluntary process in which a qualified, impartial mediator helps family members to communicate more effectively.

It gives parents a greater say about what happens with their children rather than going through the court system.

Mediation can also reduce conflict, improve communication, and is easier on their children when parents co-operate.

Speaking at the launch, Kathleen Frew, service manager, said: “I delighted to be able to offer our clients this new online mediation service. We know that parents want to be able to solve their disputes, but the pandemic has prevented us from conducting mediations face-to-face.

“I am pleased we can now offer our mediation services online.

“I am encouraging local people to contact us and discuss whether this is a
viable option for them. Also, although we do routinely charge for mediations, I want to reassure people that no client will be denied use of the new service due to an inability to pay.”

To arrange an online family mediation, clients are encouraged to use the online form on the organisation’s website – www.fmcentral.org or they can contact the service directly on 01786 472 984.

Clients will be offered a free, confidential appointment initially, and if mediation goes ahead, costs will then apply.

In some cases, legal aid may cover these costs. If clients have difficulty in meeting their costs, then Family Mediation can offer different payment options.

Last year the service marked 35 years of helping families in the Falkirk, Stirling and Clackmannanshire areas.
