Millie's journey aided by the '˜Weegie Cup'

Family and friends of a tragic teenager will mark the tenth anniversary of his death with a charity football match.

Money raised will go to raise vital funds for Airth four-year-old Millie McColl, who battled a rare form of cancer.

The Neil Forrester Memorial Trophy competition takes place on this Sunday, July 10, at Ochilview Park and all proceeds of the match and family fun day will be donated to Millie’s Journey.

The four-year-old was diagnosed with stage 4 Neuroblastoma last year and, following extensive treatment, is now in remission.

However, her family are still fundraising to allow her to access a trial drug which is only available in America and could prevent the disease returning.

Neil Forrester was only 15 when he died on July 9, 2006, in a hit-and-run incident in Stenhouse Road, Stenhousemuir.

Despite the efforts of medical services, the St Mungo’s High pupil died in Stirling Royal Infirmary.

The memorial trophy was established the following year and later christened ‘The Weegie Cup’ by Neil’s friends after his nickname, marking his Glasgow roots.

The same pals have now teamed up with Neil’s parents to revive the match ten years after his tragic death.

Neil’s mum, Marie Edmondson, said: “Neil’s school friends approached us to say they wanted to hold another match in Neil’s honour. I’m so proud that he is still in their thoughts ten years on.

“They have done a fantastic job to arrange a fun-packed day and I know Neil would be over the moon with their efforts.”

The Weegie Cup has been held in Stenhousemuir as well as Hampden Park in previous years with fundraising proceeds used to establish a local football league, covering the costs of the teams’ strips and training equipment.

The memorial match takes place between noon and 2pm with the fun day going ahead in the Warriors Club from 2–4pm.

Tickets for the match can be purchased at the gate. Adult tickets are £5 with free entry for children aged 12 and under.
