Medal for good Samaritan Margaret in Queen's honours

A volunteer who spent half a century being there for those who found themselves in crisis or at a low point in their lives has earned herself a British Empire Medal (BEM).

Margaret Coutts was named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list due to her unswerving commitment to her role as a volunteer for the Samaritans – a role she has been proud to fulfil for over 50 years.

Margaret, who gained the BEM for her services to Falkirk and Central Scotland Samaritans, said: “It’s been a privilege to be there to listen to people at some of the most difficult moments and my 50 years as a volunteer have shown me just how powerful a simple conversation can be.

“I couldn’t believe that I’ve been chosen to receive this honour. I’d like to say a big thank you to Vikki, my branch director for nominating me. It was a huge surprise and I’m truly touched by this recognition for something that has been and continues to be such a special part of my life.”

Falkirk and Central Scotland Samaritans director Vikki Wilson said: “We are all very excited and very proud of her.”

Thanks to her long service and dedication to helping others, Margaret is no stranger to receiving honours.

Back in 2014 she won the Rotary Club of Falkirk’s prestigious Community Achievement Award and then two years later she earned the Falkirk Provost’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

The fact Margaret and her colleagues are on the other end of the phone line – particularly in these hard times – means no one should have to deal with their problems alone.
