Maggie’s Forth Valley is hosting the fundraiser on Sunday, December 6, with members of the public invited to dress up as elves and walk, run, skip, cycle or cartwheel a 3km, 5km or 10km route of their choice.

All each elf has to do is raise £50 – or £150 as a group – in order to join in the fun.

Camelon Juniors and their kitman Cammy Shanks, who has terminal stomach cancer, will be among those taking part.

Coronavirus restrictions mean the usual event at the Larbert-based facility is unable to go ahead this year and Mr Shanks knows just how important the replacement fundraiser will be for the centre itself and those it supports.

The Stenhousemuir resident and life-long Camelon Juniors supporter is proud of the part the club has vowed to play on the day, with players and management all signing up in a bid to raise as much cash as possible.

He said: “I spoke to Cristina Pouso (fundraising manager) and she was telling me the money they’ve been getting in has been greatly reduced.

“They’re still doing well but are some way away from their target, which is to be expected.

“The boys at Camelon Juniors have been absolutely brilliant and have bought into it. They’re all really looking forward to the day.

“I would hate people to go through what I’m going through without the support of Maggie’s. They’ve been able to talk me through every step of the process and give me confidence that there are things they can do.

“I think it’s one in two people in the UK get cancer now and I would hate for them to go through it without Maggie’s.

“Maggie’s have been with me every step of the way. If I’ve had a problem I’ve phoned Maggie’s and I go and they talk me through the side effects and reassure me they’re normal and they give you that confidence.”
