Maddiston family mark 50 years since their beloved Margaret died in Ibrox disaster

Maddiston’s Margaret Ferguson was just 18-years-old when she was killed in the tragic stairway 13 crush at Ibrox stadium on January 2, 50 years ago at the end of the 1971 Rangers versus Celtic match.
The Glasgow team once again placed a wreath on Margaret Ferguson’s grave – as it does every year for all 66 victims of the tragedy – but Margaret’s sister Mary Gibb believes more could be done to remember the victims.

Hide AdMrs Gibb (75), who thanked the club and Rangers’ fans the world over for their continued support of her sister’s memory, said: “The memorial they have at the stadium at the moment is so small you would miss it if you drove past.
“There is money available to create a new memorial to the fans who lost their lives, we just need Rangers to give it the go ahead.”
January is always a difficult time for the family and, half-a-century on, the memory is still painful.
Mrs Gibb said: “This time of year it really gets to me and I think of Margaret and all of the other fans who died. My whole family has been brought up with this and the story comes around every January.
“We usually have a family party to celebrate Margaret’s life – she was going to turn 19 in February back in 1971.”
