Now, the Scottish SPCA is urging people to clear up after themselves when enjoying the outdoors to keep wildlife safe.

The swan family, who made their home in Helix Park’s lagoon, were just one of several broods across the district who have been watched avidly by hundreds of people during lockdown.

But when the female became obviously ill, the SSPCA was called and sadly, she did not recover.

The male swan is now looking after the youngsters who are growing fast but still delighting visitors to the popular park.

The swan is thought to have had lead poisoning – very possibly from lead fishing weights.

Scottish SPCA National Wildlife Centre manager, Steven Gray, said, “The female swan came into the centre unable to stand properly and very unstable.

“She was medicated but failed to improve so we began treating her for suspected lead poisoning.

“Lead poisoning can be debilitating to swans depending on how serious the contamination is. However, lead poisoning is treatable if it is caught early enough.

“Sadly, the female swan’s condition deteriorated and the difficult decision was made by our vet to put to her to sleep on July 12.

“Thankfully, the remaining male swan and cygnets seem to be coping well.

“Although the majority of fishing enthusiasts are responsible and clear away their lines and tackle after use, sadly, there is a minority who do not.

“We urge members of the public to consider the welfare of the wildlife in the area and clear up after themselves.

“If anyone comes across a sick, injured or distressed wild animal they should call our animal helpline on 03000 999 999.”

Falkirk Community Trust, which runs the Helix, said in a statement: “We were saddened to hear that the female swan who has successfully raised sevencygnets this year was put to sleep recently.

“We are pleased to report however, that the male swan supports the upbringing of the signets and continues to look after them.

“We continue to monitor the wildlife across our green spaces as like so many “of our visitors we also value and care about the wildlife residing in our parks.
