Drum tutor David Dowell, owner of dD Drums in Ladysmill Industrial Estate, Falkirk, got his sticks and kit out last Thursday night outside his home in Dundarrach Street, Larbert, and six-year-old Stenhousemuir Primary School pupil Libbi did the same to show their appreciation for the NHS staff and other key workers.

David said: “Our neighbours loved it – we certainly know a lot more of them now.”

The drummer, who has been a well known member of the Falkirk music scene for years, is planning to hold social distancing music lessons for neighbouring children this week and has a plan to really rock the regular Thursday night NHS clap along.

“I just thought it would be great if drummers, including my students, and non-drummers alike could clap or drum in the rhythm of the Queen song We Will Rock You. When you think about that song, there’s really not much to it, just the beat.

“It was a song the band did to let the audience join in. You don’t even need to have a drum kit to do it, just something you can hit to make a noise – we can make it a wheely bin, biscuit tin rendition.”

David hopes enough people will join in with the drum along on Thursday so the staff at Forth Valley Royal Hospital will actually be able to hear the beat.

“When you go right back to the start of people and society, we always banged on something to send a signal or a message, whether it was a warning or something else. We can send a loud and proud message to the NHS with this drum along.”

When he’s not organising mass drum happenings, David is continuing to teach people drums online under the dD Drums banner, doing his best to keep the business going during these difficult days of social distancing.
