Kind hearted Camelon bar patrons raise over £700 for Edinburgh Breast Cancer Unit

Patrons and staff from a Camelon pub, the Mariner Bar, have raised over £700 for the Edinburgh Breast Cancer Unit at the Western General Hospital.

The yearly fundraiser for the cancer unit is organised by the popular bar’s landlady, Elizabeth Morrison, as she herself was diagnosed with breast cancer eight years ago.

Elizabeth said: “I was diagnosed with breast cancer eight years ago and was given the all clear, so I try to raise some cash for the unit every year as a way of thanking them for all of the help they gave me.

"Some of our regulars have family members who have cancer or have been through it themselves so everyone is happy to help raise the money.”

The family run pub is no stranger to raising spirits, helping worthy causes and coming to the rescue of those in need as they proved last year when thieves struck at Maggie’s Centre, but Elizabeth is concerned that the longer the Mariner remains shut the less fundraising they will be able to do to help causes in the community.

"We raised £500 last year for Maggie’s to replace garden furniture that was stolen,” Elizabeth adds. “We would usually have raised three times the amount, but because we have been shut for most of the year we haven’t been able to hold any of our fundraising events.

"Normally we would be holding raffles and events like fancy dress nights, but because of the continued lockdown and the restrictions on bars we haven’t been able to do half as much fundraising as we usually do.”
