Last month, we told how Mr Thomson, who lived in Glenbrae Court, Falkirk, was overcome with emotion when staff at the Fankerton facility showed him the clip of national boss Steve Clarke wishing him well.

The video was posted following the country’s historic Euro 2020 penalty shootout win against Serbia.

In the original video, Clarke addresses him directly and says: “Willie, I saw your picture on Twitter.

“Fantastic to see you with that smile on your face. Says what it means to everybody in the country.

“I hope you enjoyed the night. I hope you're proud of the boys, their performance.

“And we're certainly proud of you.”

Mr Thomson was visibly moved by the words spoken by a man he regarded as a “magic manager”.

Strathcarron was inundated with well wishes from hundreds of Facebook and Twitter users after it shared footage of the moment he was shown Clarke’s statement.

Beaming with pride and joy, Mr Thomson was filmed saying: “I'm so proud of you.
