Here's how locked down Falkirk folk plan to celebrate Hogmanay

Current COVID-19 restrictions may have put an end to some of the traditional ways we see in the New Year but they have not stopped the people of Falkirk from marking the occasion in their own way.

A number of Falkirk Herald readers took to social media yesterday to give details about how they were going to celebrate Hogmanay 2020 and ring in the bells.

Learning to adapt to ever changing situations has been a skill we have all had to master in 2020 and many have come up with new ways to mark the end of the year.

Deborah Simpson: “We should all stand on our door steps and shout Happy New year.”

David Cochrane: “Everyone should stand at their doors and applaud the New Year at the bells for a few minutes in a show of defiance.”

As usual food and drink looks set to play a prominent part in the night.

Zara Dickson: “Sitting in my back garden round a fire getting steaming. Buzzing.”

Many people said they will be trying to do the things they normally do.

Gordon Penman: “I always have a wee steak pie, Irn Bru and chocolate cake. I like Only an Excuse and Still Game and watching the bells arrive in different countries. I much prefer the New Year to Christmas.”

Lesley Gilbert: “Same as normal – at home with my family. Our street are going to do a doorstep happy New Year at midnight. Party poppers galore.”

Lisa Fullerton: “A few drinks at home with family as always and, notice to all – fireworks – putting 2020 to bed with a bang.”

Lauren Craft: “I'll probably spend my time attempting to calm down my dog cos she's terrified of fireworks.”

Thomas Ramage: “Fireworks from Stirling on BBC Scotland this year probably as good as it's going to get.”

Shirley Grant Anderson: “I am a Falkirk BaIrn living in Washington DC. I will be home bringing in the bells, hoping 2021 brings us a very happy and healthy New Year. Hoping my hometown Falkirk has no more spread of COVID-19 and no more death.”

For some 2020 was just too tragic to even consider holding any kind of celebration.

Stevo Holland: “There is nothing to celebrate this year, too much has happened and too many people I know have passed away this year. Celebrating just seems the last thing on my mind right now.”

While others displayed their dry wit – well hopefully they were only joking.

Steven Arthur: “Having a massive house party – going to be 50 folk there, loads of drink and drunk folk around.””

Chris Horne: “Travelling to Edinburgh for the bells then through to Glasgow on the Saturday afternoon.”

John Jamieson: “Looking forward to trying out my new outfit in the back garden.”

Robby Hunter: “Going to the pub and then out clubbing.”
