Grangemouth's social grocer here to help during lockdown

A social enterprise which delivers fresh produce from local sources direct to customers’ doors will be continuing to provide its vital service during the new 2021 lockdown.

The Social Grocer’s mission is to reduce food insecurities within local communities and to ensure not only is fresh food delivered to those who need it most, but also offer support and signposting to other organisation who can help with fuel poverty, the threat of homelessness and health and wellbeing.

People who are confined to their home due to shielding from COVID-19 or other reasons can order their groceries online at the The Social Grocer and the food, which comes from local suppliers, will be deliver to their homes.

When the Social Grocer receives a food parcel referral, it will deliver it directly to the person in one of its own Social Grocer vans to ensure the dignity of the person receiving the food parcel – neighbours will not kow if the order has been paid for or if it is being delivered for free.

This handy online grocery store works in partnership with local businesses to be able to not only bring their products to people who need them but also to create a circular economy locally and create jobs.

A Social Grocer spokesperson said: “The Social Grocer CIC is set up to ensure all profits will be reinvested back into food poverty within the local area. Through profits and donations, we will deliver free food parcels to people in our community who have found financial hardship.

“This will be allocated through a referral system in partnership with the local authority and community groups.”

The Social Grocer offers breakfast meal packs, dinner meal parcels, butcher parcels, fruit and vegetable parcels, fresh meat including chicken, beef, sausages and bacon and dairy produce like cheese and eggs.

The Social Grocer is part of Community Focus Scotland, a Social Enterprise set up in 2015 which aims to reduce food poverty and unemployment within the local community.

One of the services it provides is a non-referral, free food larder which has supported over 12,000 families since it began operating.
