According to Zetland Park Regeneration Project, the police have been contacted about the incident which saw a person or persons ring-bark the cherry tree, which will effectively kill it.

Ring-barking – also known as girdling – involves the complete removal of a strip of bark from around the entire circumference of the trunk and eventually results in the death of the tree.

A spokesperson for the Zetland Park Regeneration Project said: “The council’s suppliers have confirmed that a replacement cherry tree would cost £600 – £460 for the tree itself, £105 pound for the underground guying system and £35 for delivery.

“The rose garden is a volunteer-led project, raising money through the annual duck race and concerts as well as donating hundreds of hours of hard labour, working incredibly hard for the benefit of the town.

“We cannot allow vandalism to wreck this special place.”
