Alice Hamilton, who was presented with the Jimmy Murphy Memorial Trophy in 2018 for her services to the community, has been the full-time dressmaker for Grangemouth Children’s Day since the 1990s.

Now, with the annual event on hold due to the coronavirus crisis, Alice is turning her attention to the For the Love of Scrubs – Our NHS Needs You online campaign.

The Facebook site is asking people across the UK to help address the shortage of scrubs – or medical clothing – for staff in hospitals and care homes throughout the country.

The site stated: “This Facebook group is a platform to enable those who are able to, and would like to, contribute towards supplying hospitals local to themselves with scrubs for front line workers.

“Some hospitals in the UK are faceing shortfall in scrubs and PPE, this means our nurses are not as safe as they should be. We are aiming to produce over 100 adult nursing scrubs.”

.Alice, from Grangemouth, and friend Donna Gallagher signed themselves up and are now getting busy at their sewing machines.

“Donna downloaded the pattern,” said Alice. “It’s easy enough to do once you get yourself organised. I’m using some polycotton material I already had, but I will have to order more.

“They will be needing a lot of these scrubs because they have a lot of extra people working in the hospitals now.”
