Funding secured to run free carers days in Falkirk

The University of Stirling’s Dementia Services Development Centre (DSDC) is working with Veterans Scotland to run 12 sessions throughout Falkirk and District.

Workshops are designed to provide the carers with the information they need to support someone with a dementia while considering their own personal and emotional wellbeing.

Pauline Cameron, learning officer at DSDC and also a veteran herself, will be delivering the workshops.

She said: “Carers play a vital role in society today; they often allow people with dementia to stay at home for longer, reducing stain on services such as the NHS.

“But carers need information and support to help them in their role.

“This is where DSDC and Veterans Scotland can help - the workshops will bring together carers and the information and services that are out there to support them along the way.”

The workshops have been made possible thanks to funding from the Armed Forces Covenant Fund, and Falkirk Provost Pat Reid has also come on board as Patron of the project.

They have been developed off the back of DSDC’s Carers Project which has been running since 2011.

By partnering with Veterans Scotland it is hoped that this lifeline will be able to improve quality of life for the person with dementia and their carer.

The first workshop will be launching in Falkirk on October 18.
