Suzanne Walker’s mum, Roberta, was diagnosed with bowel cancer in April, while her cousin’s son, Aiden Berry (9), has been battling lymphoma for over a year.

The 28-year-old will have her locks chopped off on Tuesday at The Den Barbers in Laurieston to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

What initially started out as a throwaway comment made to her mum about shaving her hair off has now turned into a promise to help a worthy cause.

She says her mum’s diagnosis came as a “massive shock to my family and myself”.

Suzanne said: “My mum was diagnosed in April and I jokingly said, ‘If you lose your hair, I’ll shave mine off too’.

“The more I thought about it, I thought I would do it for Macmillan. She is just at the beginning of her journey so, as a show of solidarity and support, here I am ready to brave the shave.

“I want to raise money so Macmillan can continue to provide their services to people who are either going through treatment or families who are supporting a loved one going through treatment.

“It’s going to be done at my usual hairdresser. I’ve got an online page and a sponsor sheet and so far I’ve raised about £800.

“My cousin’s son has got lymphoma and was first diagnosed with it just over a year ago and then he had his rounds of chemo and the tumour had shrunk.

“It’s come back just over the summer so that’s him started his second round and the poor scone has lost all his hair.”

Suzanne is hoping to raise a minimum of £1034, the average cost to fund a Macmillan nurse for a week.

The charity has provided invaluable support to her family so far and Suzanne, a child maintenance service worker, is desperate to repay the organisation.

She added: “A massive thank you to everybody who has donated and supported me so far because it’s really appreciated.”
