George Spalding, 86, who is a great grandfather to four, has been wearing hearing aids for two decades but began experiencing issues and his hearing gradually deteriorated.

The retired plasterer could not previously have a hearing aid in his right ear as it caused him to constantly cough due to a nerve in his ear.

Believing there was nothing which could fix the issue, he carried on with only a single hearing aid in his left ear.

However, George’s son-in-law, Douglas, recommended visiting Specsavers to see if there was a better solution to ensure he could join in with conversations at the dinner table.

Claudia McCue, hearing director at Specsavers Falkirk, was determined to help.

She said: “We trialled a number of different hearing aids to work out which would work best for George and before we knew it we came across a rechargeable hearing aid which didn’t make him cough or cause him any problems.

“We had a check-up appointment to ensure he was happy with the result and both George and Douglas were over the moon with the results.”

George was fitted with rechargeable hearing aids from Specsavers’ own advance range and was finally able to hear his relatives properly for the first time in years.

He said: “I can’t believe how good this is, I wish I had done this 20 years ago.”

Douglas said: “George’s quality of life is better than it’s been for a long time and it’s all thanks to Claudia and Specsavers.

“He was the life and soul of the party at Christmas and I think it’s fair to say he had a ball. It was frustrating for both George and the family as he really struggled to communicate but getting this resolved really has been the best gift.”

Specsavers stores in Scotland are currently open for all eye and hearing needs during the latest lockdown phase.

Under Scottish Government guidance, people may leave home to obtain medical assistance, including eye and hearing tests, which are considered essential healthcare services.
