Falkirk Soroptimists embrace technology during COVID-19 lockdown

The women of Soroptimist International Falkirk may not be able to meet up in person these days but that does not stop them from socialising and having fun.

The soroptimists, a voluntary organisation which works to improve the lives of women and girls around the world, have not been able to hold their normal fortnightly meetings since the lockdown came into force.

However, they have still been able to stay in touch through a variety of online methods.

Soroptimist Freda Paterson said: “Technology is indeed a wonderful thing. Sometimes there are reports on the negative aspects of social media, but during the current lockdown situation, it has helped us maintain communication.

“We normally meet once a fortnight in the Grange Manor Hotel, and meetings include speakers. Now the club members have been having ‘virtual meetings’ twice a week, with members enjoying the social chat, stories and regular quizzes.”

Thanks to the success of these meetings, the soroptimists have even more ambitious plans in coming weeks – including creating their own versions of popular television game shows.

“Other activities are being considered, such as Name That Tune, Would I Lie To You? and Call My Bluff. During these difficult times, social contact is vital to avoid feelings of isolation and help with mental well-being.

“At one of our recent meetings we had a virtual mindfulness session with Clare Bennett, who was one of our planned speakers. Members were able to listen to Clare and enjoy the benefits of her expertise, including a body relaxation exercise.

“Hooray for technology we say.”
