When Betty Malone said she and husband James didn’t want a party to celebrate a very special wedding anniversary, little did she realise they would have no choice in the matter.

Betty (85) and James (86), who live in Woodburn Road, in the Bog area of Falkirk, celebrated an incredible 65 years of marriage yesterday (Wednesday).

In normal circumstances that would be the call for a big family gathering including the latest member, little Ollie who is Betty and James’ great-great-grandson.

The couple have always loved music and dancing and they have had plenty of
parties, says Betty, since they first tied the knot on March 25, 1955. They were married in the manse of the Old Parish Church, Falkirk, pictured right, with best man John Mackie and bridesmaid Margaret Donaldson in attendance.

“It was just the four of us plus the minister,” said Betty.

James had caught Betty’s eye when they met as he was wearing Teddy Boy clothes, with a quiff and a pair of blue suede shoes that jive-
loving Betty, nee Elizabeth Cunningham, couldn’t fail to notice.

In the decades since, their family has grown with their children Alexander, James, Donna and Dorothy giving the couple eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren as well as little Ollie who will be three in May.

The diamond wedding was celebrated with a dance at Camelon Social Club but this year the family have told their parents they’ll just have to wait for the celebration.

Betty says she wouldn’t have wanted a big party anyway – because it’s just not the same when you can’t dance.

“I can’t get up on the dance floor now – I need a walking aid,” she said.

The couple won’t be alone as they live with their son Alexander, who is their carer.

However, daughters Margaret, Donna and Dorothy and son James are having to stay away to follow government guidelines.

Betty said: “I was told I’d have to wait for my Mother’s Day flowers and now my anniversary flowers but I don’t mind.”

Before the strict regulations came in, James had been out only occasionally as he does not keep good health.

However, Betty will miss being taken out to the shops and for a run in the car by her great-grand-daughters.

She admits she is struggling with the order to stay indoors. “I keep getting into trouble,” she said.
