Lewis Baird was set the challenge of completing the equivalent of the postponed Etape Caledonia race within a fortnight by the organisers of the Falkirk Junior Bike Club he attends.

The 11-year-old decided to use it as an opportunity to help Strathcarron Hospice, where a relative of a close friend was cared for last year.

Remarkably, Lewis went on to achieve his goal in just eight days and was supported all along the way by his dad, Colin.

The youngster was also backed by family, friends and neighbours who donated almost £800 in sponsorship money.

A ten-mile cycle round Comely Park in Falkirk by Lewis’ sister, Stella, added to the final sum.

The £775 Lewis has raised will now go towards supporting Strathcarron’s vital care services.

Lewis’ mum June said: “He chose Strathcarron because we have friends who have used it at the end of a loved one’s time and he knows how important it was to them as a family.

“He said, ‘I really wanted to make people feel better when they’re ill and I know that money will help’.

“He found it challenging because he was doing it early in the morning.

“We’re really proud and would like to thank all the family, friends and neighbours for their kind donations which were much appreciated by the hospice.”
