Looking to future development of the service, a recent grant of £18,000 from the Order of Malta and the Global Fund for Forgotten People means a plan to gradually replace older, less emission friendly buses for its many clients can now be launched.

Gerry Robertson, chairman of the Order of Malta Dial-a-Journey Trust, said: “The vehicles we are replacing are around 15-years-old and have very high mileages, while the newer vehicles we are buying have lower exhaust emissions.

“So they are more environmentally friendly and contribute to reductions in our carbon footprint. We constantly strive to maintain as modern a fleet as possible, but we still have a way to go, and welcome any donations that will help provide the most modern, comfortable and eco-friendly vehicles for our customers.”

The Order of Malta Dial-a-Journey Service serves Falkirk and the Forth Valley area, providing special support for those who need it when travelling and who can’t use public transport.

As well as elderly people, it also helps wheelchair users and those with physical and other impairments travel and take part in activities they may have otherwise been unable to do.

The service’s professionally trained and skilled drivers collect clients from their homes and take them to their destination, ensuring they are prepared and ready to travel, assisting them to board, and making sure their home is locked up and secure before setting off.

The driver helps the client to disembark and before departing, ensures that he/she is appropriately looked after. On the return journey the client is collected and safely returned home.
