Forth Environment Link (FEL) this week donated enough mince pie-making kits for 150 families to a variety of facilities.

The organisation gifted jars of homemade mincemeat to a network of food banks and pantries, as well as the remaining ingredients needed to make the pastry, including eggs kindly donated by Egglicious Eggs.

Jules Ryan, FEL partnerships and pathways coordinator, said: “At this time of year we’d normally be busy making hundreds of mince pies for our annual Green Christmas event.

“With community celebrations like this on hold, we put our heads together and came up with an idea that would not only enable us to reach out to low-income families, but also allow families and individuals to learn a new skill by making their own mince pies.

“Over the last few months, we’ve been well aware of the pressure that food banks and pantries have come under and the uncertainty that many families face with regards to local lockdowns, redundancies and financial concerns to name but a few.

“We wanted to give Falkirk families something fun to do at home, a festive antidote to the long winter months that lie ahead.”

Vicki Ferguson, the charity’s climate kitchen project officer, said: “By providing the kits, recipes and online support, families will be able to enjoy the experience of making and enjoying some delicious mince pies. They make lovely little homemade, thoughtful gifts for a loved one or neighbour.”
