Carron and Carronshore Gala will no longer take place in 2020

The difficult decision not to host the event at all this year was taken last week

Residents in Carron and Carronshore are being encouraged still to put the flags out next week, despite the local gala day no longer taking place.

Organisers of the Carron and Carronshore Gala Day are asking people to ‘feel free’ to still put up the bunting for what would have been the villages’ gala day.

The call came after the difficult decision was made last week to cancel the 2020 event, which had originally been due to take place in Gairdoch Park on Saturday, June 6, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The committee had previously announced they would reschedule the family event and were working towards holding it on August 1.

However, they have now said there will no longer be an event this year due to time constraints.

The news will come as a disappointment for all those in the community, particularly the 35 children in the retinue, including ten-year-old queen elect Mirren Anderson of Carronshore Primary School.

In a statement on social media, the committee said: “Due to the current ongoing situation with Covid-19 the committee have come to the decision that due to time constraints and restrictions in place it would be best to cancel the gala day for 2020.

“We hope that everyone understands and we will be in touch with the retinue parents soon regards how we will move forward for the gala day in 2021 once we can meet as a committee to finalise the details.

“We do understand that some kids may not want to take part next year and we will look in to all options to accommodate everyone.

“So as there will be no event this year can we ask all residents of Carron and Carronshore to feel free to still put your flags on June 6, 2020 on what would have been the gala day.

“Thanks again for all the continued support.”

This year would have been the third Carron and Carronshore Gala Day in recent years, after the community event was revived in 2018 through the power of Facebook after an 18-year lay-off.

For the past two years large crowds have flocked to Gairdoch Park for the event, which features a wealth of entertainment and attractions for the whole family.

It had been hoped this year’s event would be another huge success, however now the communities’ attentions will turn to the 2021 event.

A number of planned fundraisers in the run up to the gala day had already been called off due to the current pandemic.
