The car park at Callendar Estate Activity Centre is the hub of five popular walking trails and four mountain biking trails around the estate.

But the owners say they are worried that a lack of spaces is leading to dangerous parking and are seeking planning permission to add another 34 spaces.

They say this will also help nearby businesses including Scottish Segways, Greenrig Cycles and The Café at Canada Wood, as some visitors have been turning away as parking is not available.

A planning application states: “Throughout last year we witnessed on numerous occasions the existing carpark overflowing, where cars where being parked on the verge of Lochgreen Road and on Lochgreen Road itself.

“We have become increasingly concerned regarding the safety of the would-be trail users and also the drivers of passing vehicles.

“We have developed a plan which would extent the existing car park giving an additional 34 spaces which would be suitable for cars, campervans and mini buses.”

They acknowledge that car park is on the edge of a historic battle site – the Battle of Falkirk Muir 1746 – but say they have spoken to Falkirk Council’s heritage engagement officer, Geoff Bailey.

Their statement adds: “He has confirmed that this would not have any significant impact upon the visual setting – and might encourage visitors to walk the Battle of Falkirk trail that Callendar Estate have created.”
