Newtown Park Association (NPA) has been responsible for the ground since 2012, focusing on enhancing the facility with an all-weather pitch and the development of a community hub on the site.

Now the group is fundraising to repair the wall.

NPA trustee Harry Waugh said: “During the time of transforming the playing surface, floodlighting and terracing, work has also been progressing, in the background, on the hub development.

“Between the two phases £700,000 has been spent on the sports side and at least £2 million is required for the hub.

“Which leads us to the wall. It has been a long time since 1787 when Robert Burns called the town a ‘dirty, ugly place’.

“I would like to think we have come along way since then, but the perimeter wall of Newtown Park does not actually enhance that viewpoint.

“Sitting on a crossroads with a main bus route and the entry into the town, the wall is very visible.

“Sandwiched between a shining new supermarket development and the site of a soon, we hope, new band hall, it certainly is not showing the town to advantage.

“The wall is in great need of repair both structurally and cosmetically.

“Although not initially one of our main objectives its repair will have a big influence on its surroundings.”
